The goal of drawing
To be direct, the goal of drawing is to get harmony. It doesn't matter if the shape in your pictures goes the wrong way. For example, a certain painter said "Art is an explosion" though, it is just about eagerness and mood for painting. Either way, we need to to creat harmony in our pictures. In realism some artists might also insist on the words "texture" and "volume" though, if we can succed to make harmony in our pictures, those words also don't matter. Look at the right figure. Believe it or not, the gray tones both A and B are the same. Only one thing I can say is light and shade should be turned and turned to get harmony. In this point, what we mustn't misunderstand is stereo-type ideas such as "Light equals good" or "Shade equals bad". Pictures can't consist of only light parts or dark parts. "Light and shade" is equal to "harmony". They are not the antimony but the unity. Human's eyes always try to see the things as harmony because of the constant motion of our eyes. (Do you know it's the main reason why we saw A and B as different tones?) It is normally that we need to see somethings which are different for us to see more clearly and immidiatly. Then we can distinguish the things or equate them clearly. It's so-called "recognition". But the harmony which were constructed before we draw or paint sometimes interfere with our drawing or painting. The paint is real-time, the step before we get to recognition in our brains. So let's draw. And then we can understand how deep painting is. Painting is interesting!
